The natural world is a single, expansive system. Its components must cooperate and maintain equilibrium in order for life to continue. Both the planet's surrounding atmosphere and the life forms that inhabit it depend on a stable carbon balance. Throughout the carbon cycle, nature recycles all of the carbon atoms that are currently in existence in order to preserve this equilibrium and a healthy distribution of carbon.
